Curriculum

We offer a broad curriculum with a key focus on literacy and numeracy knowledge, skills and dispositions. The following Learning Areas are supported by school-based specialist teachers:

  • Science
  • Technologies
  • Health and Physical Education
  • The Arts

All students are taught using the Australian Curriculum. The SA Curriculum has also been designed to help all young South Australians to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. 

The SA Curriculum framework makes explicit that the integration of dispositions, capabilities and knowledge enables deep understanding and the ability to transfer and apply learning in a range of contexts.

Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum

The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) is required for all children and young people in our school. It’s taught each year by teachers who have completed a full-day KS:CPC training course.   

It teaches children to:  

  • recognise abuse and tell a trusted adult about it  
  • understand what touching is appropriate and inappropriate   
  • understand ways of keeping themselves safe.

English

The English curriculum is organized into three strands – Language, Literature, Literacy – which work together to support students in developing skills which enable them to be confident communicators and critical thinkers who can develop creative solutions and be active participants within the community.

We are committed to delivering best-practice literacy instruction so that every child is supported to become a confident, capable reader and writer. 

Phonics and Spelling Scope and Sequence

At Elizabeth East Primary School, we implement the Department for Education’s Phonics and Spelling Scope and Sequence from Reception to Year 6. This evidence-based approach provides a clear, systematic framework for teaching foundational reading and spelling skills. It ensures consistency and high-quality instruction across all year levels, enabling every student to build essential literacy skills progressively.  

The scope and sequence features structured, explicit teaching of letter-sound relationships, word building, and spelling rules, with regular practice and assessment. By following this curriculum, our students gain strong foundations in decoding, encoding, and language comprehension, setting them up for ongoing success in reading, writing, and learning across all areas.  

Mathematics

Mathematics plays a crucial role in shaping students into lifelong learners, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. By engaging with mathematical concepts, students not only build a solid foundation for academic success but also develop the ability to approach real-world challenges with confidence and creativity. Students are explicitly taught concepts in number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability. 

Health and Physical Education

At Elizabeth East Primary School, our Health and Physical Education program is all about being active and having fun, while catering to unique student needs. Instilling values such as teamwork, respect and resilience are also important aspects in creating a supportive and inclusive sporting environment.  

Students in Reception to Year 5 participate in a swimming program for one week each year. This subsidised swimming program aims to promote water safety and awareness. 

Our program also includes SAPSASA events, internal school sports and a whole school Sports Day. 

Science

We employ a specialist Science teacher who allows opportunities for students to develop an understanding of important science concepts and processes in a hands on and active learning environment.  Students are encouraged to develop their scientific knowledge, understandings and skills to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues and to explore science-related careers. 

 

The Arts

We have a specialist teacher who works with all students across the school, and class teachers also provide a wide range of experiences in the Arts. The Arts curriculum offers students diverse opportunities to express themselves creatively and develop important skills. It includes:

  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Media Arts
  • Music
  • Visual Arts

Through participation in The Arts, students learn to communicate ideas, collaborate with others, and build confidence. They engage in practical activities that nurture creativity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. The Arts also provide valuable experiences where children can explore their own identities and appreciate the artistic contributions of different cultures.
